Executive Director of ZFU speaks at roundtable “Ukrainian Society and the Memory of the Holocaust”

On January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the 19th annual roundtable “Ukrainian Society and the Memory of the Holocaust” was held in Kyiv.

During one of the panels titled “Interorganizational Cooperation in the Development of Academic Jewish Studies Education: The Case of the Certificate Program in Jewish Studies, the Zionist Federation of Ukraine, and the “Diye-Slovo” Studio,” Olena Zaslavska, Executive Director of the Zionist Federation of Ukraine, delivered a presentation.

She demonstrated how the combined efforts of three different types of organizations – a political, a journalistic, and an educational one (the Zionist Federation of Ukraine, the “Diye-Slovo” Studio, and the Certificate Program in Jewish Studies) – help achieve the goal of building a unified community engaged in the study of Jewish history and culture in Ukraine within a secular context.

This year’s roundtable continued its tradition of addressing issues of Holocaust remembrance, as well as educational and research challenges in the context of the full-scale war against Ukraine.

The focus of this year’s presentations by Ukrainian experts included contemporary challenges, commemorating victims, understanding memory as a source of resilience, evolving perceptions of the Holocaust, learning through history, and the implementation of projects and exhibitions during the ongoing Russian aggression and war against Ukraine.

The 19th roundtable was organized by the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, the Goethe-Institut Ukraine, in cooperation with the Jewish community of Düsseldorf and the Polish Institute in Kyiv.
