Jewish Knowledge Festival was held with support of ZFU
A total of 45 people attended the Jewish Knowledge Festival in Kamianets-Podilskyi in person, including 6 representatives of the local Jewish community, while 34 participants joined online. The event was continuously streamed via Zoom.
Representatives from Jewish communities in Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Hlukhiv, Uzhhorod, and many other regions of Ukraine took part.
Participants also joined from Wrocław (Poland) and Budapest (Hungary). The Polish participants joined online, while the participant from Budapest traveled to Ukraine in person.
The event featured speeches from Jewish community leaders as well as historians with an interest in Jewish topics.
The event included lectures and workshops focused on the Jewish history of various towns and shtetls, Jewish archival materials, restoration of old Jewish documents, and a workshop on preserving Jewish heritage through digitization, among others.
In addition, a unique exhibition was presented, specially prepared for this event, featuring Jewish artifacts — Torah scrolls, books from the 18th and 19th centuries, jewelry, and more — from the collections of the Kamianets-Podilskyi Museum-Reserve. These exhibits were shown to the public for the first time. Participants were given a guided tour during which they could view the artifacts and ask questions to museum staff.
At the end of the program, participants visited an old Jewish cemetery, where a special workshop on reading ancient epitaphs was held.
A detailed excursion was also conducted, introducing participants to the long history of the Jewish community in Podolia and the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi.
Unexpectedly, local residents showed great interest in the workshop at the cemetery and actively took part in reading inscriptions on the matzevot and learning about the history of the Jewish cemetery.
The event was held with the support of the Zionist Federation of Ukraine (ZFU) and the Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fund.
